About Lola & tots

Our Why!

Lola & tots was built on the idea that toddlers can master fundamental life skills through creative exploration in a safe, engaging and nurturing space. We aim to create a learning environment where through early education and cultural exploration, kids can build tolerance and empathy and make the world a better place.

As first-generation Latinas who are passionate about education, we saw the need for early childhood educational programming in the community of Bedford-Stuyvesant. We are proud to say that we were the first play space to open in Bedford-Stuyvesant as there were limited options in the world of early education for families in the neighborhood. As New Yorkers, born and raised, we have seen the effects of gentrification on communities of color. Thus, it has been an empowering experience, as minority entrepreneurs, to serve the community of Bedford-Stuyvesant, a super-fast gentrifying neighborhood.

Our community has inspired us daily and our aim is simply to inspire it back! Through our space we are able to introduce families to entrepreneurs within the neighborhood that provide programming with our mission in mind. Although we own and manage the space, we still teach some of the programming ourselves. It allows us to really get to know our community and the people we serve.

Meet the team

JESSENIA, CO-DIRECTOR

After graduating from Manhattan College with a B.A. in International Studies, I left the U.S. to teach English to 7th, 8th and 9th graders in a small rural town in Honduras. When I returned, I served as an Americorps Vista for a year followed by the completion of my MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy with a specialization in Finance from NYU Wagner. My time in Grad school, as well as my fellowship with Education Pioneers, further fueled my passion for education. From 2013-2016, I worked as a Student Services Manager and Resident Director of Operations for Achievement First Endeavor Elementary, in Brooklyn. While at AF Endeavor, I began to take notice of Kindergarteners and their lack of preparation and social development upon entering school. I quickly realized that I wanted to work towards increasing awareness about the importance and long-term positive results of early childhood education.

NATALIE, CO-DIRECTOR

After graduating from the State University of New York at Albany with a B.A. in Psychology, I was captivated by the education realm and worked as a pre-K teacher in both Albany and Yonkers, NY. Prior to becoming an Entrepreneur, I dabbled within the areas of Public Relations, Management and Event Planning. My experience at Columbia Business School taught me how important preparation is at any age. Upon having my 1st daughter, I quickly became engrossed by early childhood development and its importance. As Co-Director of Lola and tots, I develop programming and cultivate partnerships that align with the vision of making the world a more accepting and tolerant place through early education and cultural exploration. Since the launch of our business, my daughters have been working with and as a single mother, I strongly believe that it takes a village to raise the next generation of leaders. I aspire to raise children that are proud of their own background while respecting that of others which is why traveling and exploring is so important to us. It serves as inspiration for developing educational programming that nurtures inclusiveness and empathy to allow for well-rounded, sensitive children.

Lis, Teacher

I'm Lis, and I'm the Co-working and Care Teacher. Let me tell you a bit about myself—I'm not just your average teacher! Alongside my role here, I'm also a passionate birth and postpartum doula and a preschool dance aficionado. Yup, you guessed it, kiddos are my world, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

When I'm not spreading joy in childcare, you'll find me indulging in my hobbies. Whether I'm lost in a captivating book, busting out some killer dance moves, knitting up a storm, or jamming on my bass, I'm always up for a good time.

But here's the best part—I'm beyond excited to dive in and get to know each and every one of the incredible families that make Lola & Tots the extraordinary place it is. Together, let's make magic happen!

Jamie, teacher

Allow me to introduce myself—I'm Jamie Mumford, and I couldn't be more stoked to be part of the Lola & Tots team. Let me give you a glimpse into my world: I've spent years immersed in the world of childcare, wearing many hats along the way.

From my days as a nanny and babysitter to my time as a camp counselor and swim teacher, I've had the pleasure of working with kiddos of all ages and in various care settings. I've also lent a hand to families navigating tricky terrain, whether it's sleep training, fostering independent play, or tackling behavioral hurdles.

In between all the childcare adventures, I've pursued my passion for learning. I studied computer science at the University of Maine and the New York City College of Technology. I also spent years as a lifeguard and swim instructor, along with a stint as an EMT in Minnesota!

Now, here's where it gets even more exciting—I've got a serious knack for languages. You might catch me throwing around some German, French, Spanish, or Japanese—it's all part of the fun!
